What is the best organic gardening book? That is a good question. When it comes to organic gardening books, there are many things to considered. Since organic gardening has some things that are very different from the "Chemical Guys" gardening, some basic ideas need to be addressed.
First, the author should talk about the basics of organic gardening. Since many people are new to this enjoyable pasttime, it is necessary to give a little background to the practice of organic gardening. Therefore the best organic gardening book is one that serves as a basic primer.
Another area that should be addressed is the foundation of the garden: the soil. The best organic gardening books expain the need for healthy soil and how it is developed. It sould also explain how to correct any gardening indiscretions in the past by the use of chemicals. Techinques of soil improvement and the reasons behind what is done should also be covered in the organic gardeningf book.
Fertilizer use is always an area of contention between organic gardners and the "Chemical Guys". A good organic gardening book will expain the why's and wherefors of fertilizer use.
Pest control is a big area to consider. Many non-organic gardners think of all bugs as bad. The true organic gardner knows that there are good bugs as well as bad. The organic gardening book should focus on selective bug control, killing only the true pests while preserving, even encouraging the growth of the beneficial bugs.
The best organic gardening book should touch on the different types of gardens that can be grown. The ornamental flowers and shurbs, the container gardens and the fruit and veggie gardens are some of the areas that organice gardening techniques can be applied. The best organic gardening books will include tricks and tips for these.
The best organic gardening books will examine the various techniques used in organic gardening. Propagation, and the yearly cycle of the garden can also be included to help the organic gardner create a beautiful garden.
I've found a book that, in my opinion meets these criteria. You can find it at Amazon, com. Its Goeff Hamilton's "Organic Gardening".

ReplyDeleteGreat blog!!
ReplyDeleteIt's encouraging to see people taking more of an interest in "getting back to Nature" through organic gardening. Gardening, organic gardening in particular, can be therapeutic for the body, mind and Spirit. Perhaps by working with Nature and directing instead of destroying the natural course of things we can allow selves to do the same. We are what we eat!
OMG, my sweetheart LOVES gardening and is always coming up with odd things to grab around the house to use in the garden. I thought he was crazy but see there's really something out here. His birthday is just around the corner, I'm ordering the book right now! Thanks--it's the perfect present for him and his green thumb!
